THE GORDON PARKS FOUNDATION permanently preserves the work of Gordon Parks, makes it available to the public through exhibitions, books, and electronic media and supports artistic and educational activities that advance what Gordon described as "the common search for a better life and a better world." The Foundation is a division of the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation.
The Gordon Parks Foundation preserves Parks' creative work and grants educational scholarships to the next generation of young artists advancing what Parks described as "the common search for a better life and a better world." The Gordon Parks Award is given to individuals who have enriched our lives in ways that reflect Parks' ideas and goals by using creative means to inspire the next generation. The funds raised will allow the Foundation to continue to grow its educational scholarship program and to continue to make his work available to schools, museums and communities around the world.
The images comprise several photographs of the same female nude, lustrously coloured in still-wet red paint. The styling of the subject – the powerfully red shapes of the body shot against the bright white background – is such as to render the female figure almost abstract.
The book from which the images are drawn was inspired by an earlier Thompson monograph, Blue Torso, published in 1993. The more recent photographs were shot in New York City with a single model; and the resultant book published in a limited run of only 100 copies. The photographs represent a rare, radiant diversion from Thompson’s better-known role as one of the leading fashion, advertising and celebrity photographers of his generation.
‘I decided to use red paint because of its bold and powerful nature,’ says Thompson of the series. ‘The portrait session consisted of one model and took place in one day. After the day of photographing and observing the results, I was taken back by the beauty and how the different images played against each other in the most abstract way. The human body, having been painted and photographed for centuries, always amazes me.’

Illustration Now! Fashion published by Taschen
"Every dress begins with a drawing, every skirt with a sketch. Illustration is integral to fashion design not only as a means of expression, and the starting point of every design, but also for patterns and prints as well as magazine editorial illustrations. Often, artists will even illustrate the newest looks directly from the catwalks. It’s high time we celebrated fashion illustration in our Illustration Now! series: here you’ll find new work from 90 artists around the globe, including Ruben Toledo, Aurore de La Morinerie, Bil Donovan, Tanya Ling, and Jean-Philippe Delhomme. The book features quotes by experts from the fashion world: Valentino compliments the work of Gladys Perint Palmer; voices out of the studios of Maison Martin Margiela, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, and H&M add their praise for the talents in the book."
New Icons of Fashion Illustration published by Laurence King
"Fashion illustration is and always has been about far more than pretty drawings of pretty dresses. This lavish celebration of today's leading artists in the field showcases the timeless craft and amazing diversity that characterize the genre.
From David Downton to Cecilia Carlstedt and from Jason Brooks to Jordi Labanda, 28 masters of fashion illustration from across the world are featured, one by one, in a grand tour of the best work currently produced. While some illustrators create daringly bold graphics, others prefer delicate watercolours and ink drawings. Throughout the volume, both hi-tech multimedia effects and traditional drawing skills are given pride of place, with many of the artists using a mixture of techniques. Lively commentary accompanies the images, while interviews with each illustrator provide further insight into their influences and methods."
Jed Root takes a spot in the coveted BoF 500, 'The People Shaping the Global Fashion Industry.' Jed Root artists Anya Ziourova, Joe Zee, Mariano Vivanco, Olivier Zahm and Scott Schulman are also included.
