Simon Procter for Marriott Hotels

Simon Procter just wrapped a shoot for Marriott Hotels in Prague, via agency McGarry Bowen.  We can't give too much away but the shoot was a pretty epic affair down in Prague.

An immense ex-Soviet film studio was taken over. As the old studios were so full of dust, they were pretty much huge fire traps. "KOURENT ZAKAZANO" was written on all the walls, meaning "Absolutely No Smoking" in Czech.

While Disney was shooting a major blockbuster next door,  McGarry Bowen were at work on their own ambitious creative project.

According to Simon..."It was a challenging shoot, a lot of elements to pull together and a huge international crew to manage. But everyone really forged as a team and we actually had a lot of fun. I even managed to persuade our Czech studio crew to let me get access to the ancient roof space, not for the faint hearted!"

Johnnie Sapong & Paul Smith

Johnnie Sapong is one of the most popular and talented hair stylists working today, and luckily we happen to represent him. He’s worked with photographers from David Bailey to Mert and Marcus, with clients like Flair, i-D, British Vogue, Fendi and Sisley.

He recently had the opportunity to be on the other side of the camera for the Spring/Summer 2007 Paul Smith campaign. His agent Kellie managed to catch up with him.

1. How did you get to model in the Paul Smith campaign?

I was asked to appear in the campaign by Julian Broad who is the photographer and has shot the campaign for the last few seasons. As I have known Julian for years, whilst working as a hairstylist on shoots with him I thought it would be fun to see what is was like to be on the other side.

2. How does the experience of being in front of the camera differ than styling hair on the other side of the camera?

The main differences between being in front of and behind the camera for me really came down to 'watching and being watched'. What I mean by that is, as a hair stylist you work as part of a team to create looks and then spend days maintaining these creations, watching, looking, seeing these creations come to life. Whilst modeling there are numerous people (aka the team), directing, looking, creating, styling, grooming you, to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. I think it helped alot having a background in this business as most of the other models cast for the campaign were real people too.

3. Was there a groomer on set? And, did you give the groomer a hard time?

Yes, there was hair and make-up on set. The hairstylist was a friend of mine called James Mooney and the make up artist was Karen Alder. It was great to be pampered (Karen often works with Kylie Minogue so I was looking forward to a relaxing facial massage) and feel relaxed before putting on my outfit and getting ready to be watched! I did wind James up by telling him that the client would like my dreadlocks blown out and straight, but as you see in the campaign he was not convinced!
