We are pleased to welcome still life photographer Spencer Higgins to the Jed Root, Inc. family! Spencer lives and works in New York, drawing influence for his abstract work from multiple fields including sculpture and typography. We conducted a little Q & A with Spencer for the blog:
JED ROOT: What’s your background? Where are you from and how did you get your start in photography?
SPENCER HIGGINS: I got into photography like many, by experimenting with the family camera. This progressed to working in a great little camera store, a photo gallery and shooting for some local zines in Texas. I moved to New York to attend Parsons and focus on photo 24/7. From there, I shipped off to Fabrica, Benetton's Creative Research Center inItaly, and ended up co-founding their Interactive department. This started me down a path of Design, Typography, and 3D that allowed me to explore different forms and mediums and continues to influence and shape my work as a photographer.
JR: Who are some of your favorite photographers?
SH: Paul Outerbridge, whose still-lifes are very inspirational for me (though his portfolio was quite varied, shall we say…).
Edward Steichen, one of the great masters of course, whose advertising work I find to be very compelling.
Florence Henri, another impressive photographer whose still-lifes where incredibly provocative, and lastly, another one of the legends, Horst P. Horst.
JR: What are you working on now?
SH: I just finished a few prints for the One Image Charity. Check it out, there are great photographers and it's for a very worthy cause dedicated to helping children in the Philippines and Haiti.

JR: What’s on your iPod right now?
SH: An East Village Radio podcast.
JR: Any thoughts as you join your new agency?
SH: Indeed. I'm excited to be working with Jed Root and looking forward to working with new clients!
