Kristen Sowinski: Hi Alice! Welcome to Jed Root Inc! So, why did you choose us to be your first agency?
Alice Lane: Jed Root to me has always been an agency that supports and strives for creativity. When I met Kellie she immediately understood me and made me feel like a million dollars!!
KS: Give us some info on yourself. Where are you from? What’s your background in? How did you get your start?
AL: I grew up in Shropshire in England. Lots of sheep and cows everywhere!! I spent my whole time desperate to leave and move to London. I went to Art School to escape!
When I was in London I got involved in music. I lived in the East End of London which was full of people with great style, doing creative things and it got me interested in fashion. I moved to NYC and started doing makeup and grooming on bands and performance artists.
KS: I know you were in a band and music is a big influence in your work. What musical artists influence you? Do you have any other influences?
AL: Music and performance still means everything to me and really influences how I approach my work. I love the "performance" of a fashion shoot and how the music played greatly effects the model and her mood.
I love English bands like Joy Division, The Smiths and the Fall but also could not live without Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt. Film greatly influences me also...films like Bergman's “Fannie and Alexander” and “Days of Heaven” by Terrence Mallick. I am obsessed at the moment with Clowns and my HERO is Charlie Chaplin.
KS: How did you get your “big break?"
AL: I got my break when David Sims was doing a portrait story and needed a makeup artist. Katy England was styling it and had met me on a shoot and said yeah!! Give her a job!! And off I went!! I have worked with David a few times now and it is always a fantastic experience...and he plays good music on set...which is always a bonus.
